While Mountain View is arguably the global epicenter of economic opportunity, not everyone has equal access to participate in the community’s prosperity. Earning a college degree unlocks career advancement and higher earnings potential but high tuition costs along with work and family responsibilities prevent many people from even getting started. The Mountain View Working Scholars program is a community-funded initiative that begins to solve this problem by bringing a tuition-free bachelor’s degree to the community.
Working Scholars pairs a private ed tech company, Study.com, and a regionally accredited public university, Thomas Edison State University, to create a low-cost, efficient college pathway. Scholars use Study.com to learn on their phone, at their own pace, and transfer to Thomas Edison to complete their degree and graduate. Study.com is donating licenses valued at $4000 per scholar, which funds three-quarters of the degree program. The final quarter of the program is funded through a mix of corporate sponsorship, grants, and individual contributions, which means that Scholars have no out-of-pocket expenses and graduate with zero debt. The program has won $100,000 through the INSPIRE grant, a program funded by Google, Synopsys, LinkedIn, and Symantec, for its initial cohort of students.
